  • (2022秋•深圳月考)Many people in lockdown felt lonely and bored. "There is a loneliness epidemic (流行病)," said John Dattilo,a professor at Pennsylvania State University,US.
So he,together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings.
According to their new study, reducing loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (专注) and skill.
"When people are lost in what they are doing, they enter a state called 'flow'," Dattilo explained. "Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to concentrate fully to use our skills."
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example,if you're trying to create a challenging computer program but your skill level is low, then you're likely to feel stressed instead of achieving flow.If the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and flow will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow.So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
"When we enter a state of flow,we become focused, and we experience momentary (片刻的) enjoyment," Dattilo said. "When we leave a state of flow,we are often surprised by how much time has passed."
However, watching television usually doesn't help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren't any challenges.
"Loneliness is very connected to our health,Dattilo explained. "People tend to enjoy healthy activities and challenges," said Dattilo. "We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives."

  • (2022秋•深圳月考)A new study of ladybugs (瓢虫) has showed that not enough attention has been given to the insect (昆虫),which is an important pest (害虫) controller and is in danger.
There are more than 6,000 kinds of ladybugs around the world, including nearly 500 in the US.They are helpful in protecting plants, including crops eaten by people. The ladybugs do this by eating smaller insects that can damage the crops.Scientists say populations of ladybugs may be falling throughout the world.
The new study was done by an international group of researchers, including scientists at the UK Center for Ecology and Hydrology. They found that not enough is known about the insects and how they deal with climate change, pollution, and changes in how land is used.
The study points out that although projects that aim to save other insects, like bees, have also helped ladybugs, more research on ladybugs is needed in order to better understand how to help them.
"Ladybugs are well-loved insects, but we know so little about them," said Helen Roy,one of the study authors.Roy and her partners on the research team said several actions need to be taken to protect ladybug populations. These include calling on more citizen scientists (members of the public) to record ladybug observations and share them with researchers.Another step is to create more insect-friendly living places. "Everyone can make a difference and contribute to the protection of ladybugs and other insects," said Roy. "We need to act fast and act together."
Actions families can take include avoiding the use of insect killers on plants so there are more pests for ladybugs to eat, planting flowers that provide honey for ladybugs to eat,and keeping leaves which can provide a living place for ladybugs in colder months.
